Leadership and teamwork
The
Middle School programme at the UWCSEA is designed to provide young
adolescents with opportunities to expand the knowledge, skills, and
attitudes they have developed in the Junior School in more challenging
and diverse situations. This is especially true in regards to
leadership and team building. As young adolescents explore their place
in the world they measure themselves against adult role models and
their peers. Our Middle School programme provides structured
opportunities for students to develop leadership and teamwork skills in
a wide variety of settings.
We recognise that leadership may
take on different forms in different situations. As a result,
leadership opportunities are available for our students in classroom
settings but also during sporting events, arts performances, service
learning, and on representative councils. This is a critical stage for
leadership development as many leadership skills and practices are
engrained at a young age. The importance of adult leaders who model
appropriate leadership skills are critical in the development of our
young leaders. We expect that students will explore leadership in at
least one aspect of school life and reflect on their performance and
development.
Understanding
the dynamics of teamwork is equally important as our students develop
into active and positive members of our school community. We cannot
always be leaders and, at times, must learn to take on different roles
for the successful completion of a project or activity. Our students
are provided with many opportunities within the classroom and during
activities and service events to play a variety of roles within a team.
At times this learning is structured and regulated by a teacher, coach,
or supervisor. At other times, students are provided with the freedom
to explore team situations without direct adult supervision. Our goal
is to develop students who have the ability to lead effectively when
the need arises but who can also adapt to various roles within a team
to promote the successful completion of a project, activity or service
task within our school community and beyond.
